At Home: The Hornets

Hornets are the largest eusocial wasps; some of the species can reach up to 55 mm (2.2 in) in length. The true hornets make up the genus Vespa and are distinguished from other vespines by the width of the vertex (part of the head behind the eyes), which is proportionally larger in Vespa and by the anteriorly rounded gasters (the section of the abdomen behind the wasp waist).

3 days ago, at home, in my small and untidy lawn, these beautiful insects have their nest built...hanging to my half-dead rose..I’ve had captured some shots...but they are really tiny, guess about 9-10mm in length. Not sure whether they’re new borns or guarding their nest.

Some of my shots….
